New Office Opens Doors for Community Action of Orleans & Genesee

Exciting news for local families! Community Action of Orleans & Genesee has just kicked off its new office for Emergency Services and Case Management programs. This new hub is conveniently located at 131 South Main Street, right behind the agency’s popular Main Street Thrifts, Gifts, and More store. For those planning to visit, make sure to enter through the Platt Street entrance—good to know!

A Step Towards Better Accessibility

This move from their old spot at 409 East State Street is all about improving accessibility for families seeking support. It’s especially beneficial for those who may not have reliable transportation. Ryan Lasal, the Director of Community & Family Program Innovation, has stressed how important it is that their programs are easy to find and access. It’s a win-win for the community!

Your New Food Pantry Location

The new office isn’t just a place for Case Management; it’s also going to house the food pantry! Previously located at the old State Street address, the pantry will now be more convenient for those in need. Plus, the overnight pantry at 409 East State Street will keep running for after-hours food assistance, ensuring that help is never too far away.

A Range of Support Services

Community Action aims to be the safety net for families facing financial challenges, offering essential services like food and utility assistance. But that’s not all—they’re also part of the New York Health Equity Reform (NYHER) Program! This program provides a unique opportunity for Medicaid members to be screened for unmet needs such as housing, nutrition, and transportation. Based on the results, participants may receive free services tailored to improve their health and well-being. Sounds great, right?

Serving the Community for Decades

With nearly 60 years of service under their belt, Community Action has been a lifeline for about 5,000 individuals across the two counties. They offer a wide range of services, including food, childcare, housing, and transportation. Recently, the agency received some federal funds that were previously frozen, which removes a layer of financial concern.

Holiday Assistance is Here!

As the holiday season approaches, Community Action is gearing up to support families in need. This year, they have received 293 applications, representing 793 individuals. Among them, 149 children will be receiving toys for Christmas, thanks to generous donations from local organizations. Families will also be treated to holiday boxes filled with food and gifts for children under 18—what a fantastic way to spread some holiday cheer!

Community Involvement and Spirit

A heartwarming “Giving Tree” is set up at the Main Street Corner Thrift Store, making it easy for community members to grant children’s Christmas wishes. It’s truly a wonderful example of how everyone can come together to support each other during this special time of year. Plus, Community Action works hand-in-hand with local charities and organizations to ensure families have enough food and holiday support.

A Vibrant Community Feature

As part of their efforts to foster community spirit, a local artist, David Burke, is in the process of painting a mural on the south wall of the Main Street Gifts, Thrift, and More Store. This beautiful piece will promote inclusivity and community focus, and it’s funded by a grant from the Statewide Community Regrant Program, administered by the Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council.
