Helena officially took on her new role in September 2024, and the excitement surrounding her leadership is palpable!

A Legacy of Care and Compassion

OFP has been a beacon of hope since it first opened its doors in 1987, thanks to founder Susybelle Gosslee. Over the years, the organization has provided a safe haven for young women facing abuse, neglect, poverty, and homelessness. With a mission centered around empowerment, OFP offers not just shelter but also essential life skills training to help women carve out brighter futures.

The Transitional Living Center: A Home for Healing

One of the standout features of OFP is its Transitional Living Center (TLC) program, specifically designed for single women aged 18 to 24. With two cozy apartment-style TLCs located in Old East Dallas, OFP creates a home-like environment for its residents. The first TLC opened back in 1992, followed by the second TLC, which welcomed its first residents in late 2015. Each year, OFP serves around 40 young women across these two locations, providing them with an average stay of 219 days.

During their time there, the young women participate in weekly life skills lessons and benefit from intensive case management delivered by dedicated staff residing on-site. This hands-on approach ensures that the young women receive continuous support every step of the way.

SOAR to Success: Preparing for the Future

OFP also runs a transformative non-residential program known as SOAR to Success, which offers valuable prevention and education resources. Throughout the school year, participants collaborate with site coordinators to enhance their skills and opportunities. This multifaceted approach has allowed OFP to help thousands of women, girls, and adult allies in their journey towards self-sufficiency and independence.

Helena Banks: A Passionate Leader

Helena L. Banks is no stranger to the OFP family; she initially started as a volunteer before joining the board and serving for four years. With extensive experience in development and leadership from organizations such as KERA, Planned Parenthood of North Texas, SPCA of Texas, and the American Heart Association, she brings a wealth of knowledge to her new role.

Holding a BA in Political Science from Sam Houston State University, Helena also navigated her campus leadership as president of the Student Government Association, a role that undoubtedly honed her skills in advocacy and community outreach.

A Vision for the Future

Helena is already committed to making a significant impact on OFP’s future. With her enthusiasm shining through after a successful fundraising event, a Gala and Casino Night in November, she is keen to keep the momentum going. She plans to focus on ensuring the long-term sustainability and expansion of OFP’s programs and services, as well as introducing innovative fundraising ideas to reach a broader audience.

OFP is on the move, and the leadership transition comes at a perfect time as preparations ramp up for North Texas Giving Day, an event aimed at further supporting the organization’s crucial work.
